KiwiCare Guardianship Services

The KiwiCare guardian’s role ensures prompt resolution to any problems experienced by the student or their respective school. Our guardian’s have a vast amount of experience with the pressures and challenges that face young people who study in a foreign country.

Students under the age of 18 must have an approved guardian. KiwiCare guardians are carefully selected, trained and supervised and have clear guidelines on our expectations and their duties. They meet regularly to discuss any problems and to report on the progress of the students. Reports are sent regularly to the parents and agents. Parents are encouraged to place their children in this programme.

Parents are also able to choose another individual as their child's guardian if they wish. This person will be required to attend an interview at Kiwi English Academy to ascertain their appropriateness as a guardian. He or she will be required to sign a document accepting full responsibility for the student under 18.

Rules for Students Under 18

Kiwi English Academy endeavours to give special care and attention to our young students. We need to have an assurance of support by the parents and their willingness to comply with school rules and standards to ensure at all times their happiness and well-being.

  • Attendance: Students are to attend all classes and be on time. If a student does not attend a class because of sickness etc, this must be communicated to the school before the class starts. Students must have a doctor’s certificate if requested by the school.

  • Homework: This must be done every day, or as requested by the teacher. The student must complete all set tasks when asked.

  • Co-operation: The student must at all times co-operate with teacher’s instructions, while participating in discussions and maintain a friendly and co-operative attitude in class. The student must show consideration and respect to all members of staff and all other students.

  • Homestay: Any rules laid down by the Homestay family are to be respected. Any change to the curfew rules must be negotiated beforehand with the Guardian and the Homestay must be notified. The student MUST contact the Homestay if he/she is going to be late. It is the student’s responsibility to inform his/her Guardian of his/her whereabouts when not with the Homestay family.

  • Pocket Money: This is a guideline for the Guardian only. It is strongly recommended that parents provide no more than $80.00 per week for spending money – some estimates say $40.00 is quite sufficient. This would be on top of a necessary $20.00 - $35.00 for bus transport and $30.00 for lunch money. Additional amounts will be required for haircuts, purchase of new clothes, medical bills etc.

  • Smoking and Alcohol: The policy for each of these will be set out in the rules of member schools. Smoking is discouraged in New Zealand as it is unhealthy. Abuse of alcohol will result in expulsion from school.

  • Illegal Drugs: These will not be tolerated under any circumstance. Students found to be using drugs WILL BE EXPELLED AND SENT HOME. If it is appropriate, authorities will be notified.
