Information Update

The strong Kiwi dollar and the incidence of Bird Flu have had a negative impact on all English Language Schools. So with fewer students you may not have heard from us for a while. We are using this time to do some house keeping and to implement a new computerized database. In this regard we are reviewing the photographs that we have of your house. Ideally we would like to have two photographs, one of your house and one with some or all of the family members. If you have any digital photos we would love to incorporate them in your homestay details.

 Tour Groups

June, July and August is tour group season and all indications are that this year will be a bumper year. We are expecting groups from Japan, Thailand, France, Italy and Spain. We are not sure of the final details such as age and gender or of the exact tour dates.
These are really interesting groups and always leave our shores after shedding many tears, with many stories to tell.
If you are interested in hosting students from these tour groups we would love to hear from you.

Please email:
homestay@kiwienglish.co.nz
or phone Tomoko on 524 4711 to register your interest.

Code of Practice

The Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students was
revised in December 2003. One of the revisions was to introduce “Boarding
Establishment” as a new accommodation category. In terms of the Code
“Boarding Establishment” means:

  1. A school hostel or other hostel that provides boarding accommodation; or
  2. Accommodation provided to an international student in the residence of a family or household where five or more international students are accommodated.

The implications of this are that in terms of 19.1.1 we are responsible for “Checking that local government bylaws are being observed”.

New Regulations

The New Zealand Immigration Service is introducing new medical screening requirements for student visas and permits from 1 April 2004.

This means that from 1 April 2004 all students must provide a chest x-ray plate and x- ray certificate if:

  1. They intend to remain in New Zealand for more than six months but less than two years; and
  2. They are from a high risk country; or
  3. They have spent (lived and/or visited) a combined total of three months or more in a high TB risk country in the past five years prior to the application being made.
